A couple of notes on this video:
1. Some people have commented that I should have included computer security alongside hacking, and I completely agree, that was an oversight on my part. Apologies to all the computer security professionals, and thanks for all the hard work!
2. I also failed to mention interpreters alongside compilers in the complier section. Again, I’m kicking myself because of course this is an important concept for people to hear about. Also the layers of languages being compiled to other languages is overly convoluted, in practice it is more simple than this. I guess I should have picked one simple example.
3. NP-complete problems are possible to solve, they just become very difficult to solve very quickly as they get bigger. When I said NP-complete and then "impossible to solve", I meant that the large NP-complete problems that industry is interested in solving were thought to be practically impossible to solve.

There's a long-held myth that cracking your knuckles can damage your hands. The sound definitely might make people around you cringe, but what's making those noises, and is it actually bad for you?

There's a space in your joints filled with synovial fluid, a liquid that reduces the friction in your joints when you move. It contains gases (oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide).

When you pop a joint, you stretch out that space between the bones. That expanding space creates negative pressure, like a vacuum, that sucks in the synovial fluid. It forms bubbles, which then collapse, and that's what you hear.

Most medical sources agree that unless you experience pain when you pop your joints, you're probably fine to keep doing it. Researchers (including one man who cracked his knuckles on just one hand for 60 years) haven't established a connection between cracking your knuckles and arthritis.

One 1990 study of 300 people did find that cracking knuckles over a long period of time led to hand swelling and decreased grip strength, but there hasn't been any follow-up research on that.

What causes aging? According to Professor David Sinclair, it is a loss of information in our epigenome, the system of proteins like histones and chemical markers like methylation that turn on and off genes. Epigenetics allow different cell types to perform their specific functions - they are what differentiate a brain cell from a skin cell. Our DNA is constantly getting broken, by cosmic rays, UV radiation, free radicals, x-rays and regular cell division etc. When our cells repair that damage, the epigenome is not perfectly reset. And hence over time, noise accumulates in our epigenome. Our cells no longer perform their functions well.

To counter this decline, we can activate the body's own defenses against aging by stressing the body. Eat less, eat less protein, engage in intense exercise, experience uncomfortable cold. When the body senses existential threats it triggers longevity genes, which attempt to maintain the body to ensure its survival until good times return. This may be the evolutionary legacy of early bacteria, which established these two modes of living (repair and protect vs grow and reproduce). Scientists are uncovering ways to mimic stresses on the body without the discomfort of fasting. Molecules like NMN also trigger sirtuins to monitor and repair the epigenome. This may slow aging.

Reversing aging requires an epigenetic reset, which may be possible using Yamanaka factors. These four factors can revert an adult cell into a pluripotent stem cell. Prof. Sinclair used three of the four factors to reverse aging in the retinal cells of old mice. He found they could see again after the treatment.

It’s a question that's been pondered for centuries. It's such an obvious question, in fact, that it barely even seems worth asking anymore. But it is worth asking! And the answer is actually pretty interesting. So let's get into it!
The quick and simple answer is that blood absorbs green light and reflects red light. As a result, it appears red to your eye.
This means that the reason why the blood looks red is because of how light is reflected through our body!

Blood is red because of hemoglobin, a protein molecule that contains iron. When the oxygen in your blood comes in contact with this iron and binds to it, it gives off a reddish color.
Hemoglobin helps transport oxygen throughout the body through arteries and veins. Hemoglobin is what gives blood its dark red color. Red light can't pass through a water molecule because of its electric charge, but green light can: it reflects off the surface of water molecules instead of being absorbed by them. That’s why if you’ve ever dived down deep in the sea, you’ll notice that reds quickly disappear, but greens can still be seen clearly.
The amount of red light can change with temperature too though.
Hemoglobin absorbs light energy (also known as photons) and converts it into heat energy instead. When there's more hemoglobin present than necessary, those extra photons are absorbed by free electrons in other molecules within our cells; this leads to higher temperatures and eventually causes overheating if conditions get too extreme (like on hot summer days). On the flip side, when there isn't enough hemoglobin available for this process due to insufficient oxygen levels or injuries like cuts from sharp objects like knives--it results in a blue discoloration because not enough light is getting through due an absence or deficiency of iron-containing proteins such as myoglobin.

So next time you hear someone tell you that blood is actually blue when it doesn’t have enough oxygen, you can tell them that they’re wrong, and that the blood is always red, but that the colour we see depends on a number of factors, including how much hemoglobin there is in the blood, how much light there is, the colour of the light, and even the temperature.

There are countless articles and videos breaking down the abysmal labor practices, horrifying environmental toll, and overall mountain of waste produced by the fast fashion industry. Activists and even just large swaths of the general public have been raising the alarm about this for well over a decade, but it hasn’t stopped the rise of some of the worst offenders in the industry. For example, the ultra-fast fashion brand Shein has skyrocketed in value over the past five years largely due to their marketing success on TikTok. A lot of us know that fast fashion is bad, but the only way companies like Shein still thrive is if we convince ourselves otherwise and hit “add to cart” anyway. So why do we do it?

The answer is that e-commerce has completely warped our view of what items should cost and how long they should last (this includes and extends to our obsession with Amazon and two-day shipping). We’re moving through trends at an unprecedented pace and it’s doomed to get worse if we don’t adjust our buying habits and learn to slow down. Consumers are being manipulated, but we can do better.
